ECOLOGICAL TEXTILES| Linen canvas |
This section includes canvas fabrics that were made from organic and conventional linen. All fabrics are made from European flax and woven in the EU.
Choosing linen canvas means opting for quality, natural materials, and sustainability. Canvas made from linen, crafted from flax fibers, offers superior characteristics that set it apart from other materials.
Linen canvas is a sturdy, relatively heavy fabric made from linen, a natural material derived from the flax plant. Canvas is always woven in a plain weave, a simple structure where the warp (longitudinal threads) and weft (crosswise threads) alternate in an over-under pattern. This weave naturally creates a strong fabric with excellent wear resistance; the strength of the flax fibers further enhances these qualities.
Linen canvas is widely used in the art world (as painting canvas) but is also applied in interior design and industrial environments. The linen canvas offered by Ecological Textiles weighs approximately 500 grams per square meter and is primarily used as an interior fabric.
Durability
Linen canvas is significantly stronger than cotton and retains its properties even after years of use. It is less prone to tearing, warping, and wear, making it suitable for long-term projects and heavy-duty applications.
Natural texture
Linen can be spun to a very fine thread, but due to the natural properties of the fiber, it is less smooth than cotton. Like other linen fabrics, linen canvas has a unique, slightly rustic texture, giving it a luxurious and timeless appearance.
Weather resistance
Linen is highly resistant to moisture and mold. This makes it particularly well-suited for use in environments or spaces with high or fluctuating humidity levels.
Eco-friendly
Linen is a natural material, biodegradable, sustainably produced, and free from microplastics. Choosing linen is a choice for nature as well as for aesthetic appeal.
The heavier linen canvas fabrics from Ecological Textiles are frequently used in interior design, for example, as upholstery fabric, curtain material, wall panels, or decorative applications. It is also sometimes used for tent fabric, sunshades, and protective covers.
The origin of linen is typically Northwestern Europe. The coastal strip between Normandy and Holland is the world’s primary cultivation area for flax, the plant used to make linen. The linen canvas in this collection includes both organic and 'conventional' fabrics.
The key difference lies in whether the flax is cultivated organically. In conventional cultivation, crop protection agents are used. According to growers, this is minimal, but still... Organic flax farming remains relatively small, though its share continues to grow steadily.
